Why I Decided to Join the Facebook Revolution

Email Article I certainly didn't expect it, but one of the "practical" take-homes from my time in Minneapolis at the Pastors' Conference is that I now find myself taking the Facebook plunge.
I began enjoying the service almost immediately after signing-up. I started getting wonderful little notes that old friends still wanted to be friends. I also found (much to my joy) that a few folks affiliated with HHBC are already on Facebook. That's exciting!
Although I dismissed this Facebook trend for a long time (mostly because it seems too trendy and teenie-bopper-ish), I finally gave in and signed up for the following reasons:
- Publicizing my "status" and what I'm up to at any given moment is a great way to share and make visible what God is doing and changing in my life (1 Timothy 4:15 "...that all may see your progress.")
- Keeping up with friends and acquaintances on a daily basis gives me abundant opportunity to speak Truth, Gospel, and encouragement into their lives.
- Following my friends and church members gives me a window into their lives, allowing me to see their passions, struggles, and daily routine.
- Answering the question, "Are you on Facebook" with an affirmative when I meet a new person gives me opportunity to follow-up on a relationship that otherwise would almost certainly sizzle out.
- Most importantly, the Gospel establishes a transformed community. The Gospel is inherently communal. Therefore, when a service like Facebook promotes community and can be used to advance the Gospel, why wouldn't I be on Facebook?
There you have it. If you are not signed-up and have no clue what I'm talking about, I strongly encourage you to visit this link and register (it's absolutely free). When you're adding your friends, be sure to search for me! And if you're already on Facebook and have not received a request from me, then do add me to your list so I can stay in touch.
